Conversation on Silence: Sozkhwani performance by Askari Naqvi and Syeda Hamid
21 December 2016
KNMA hosted an evening of Dastangoi performance narrating the stories from the Battle of Karbala, ‘A Conversation on Silence: The Affective Life of Mourning – A Performance of Soz, Marsia and Nauha-khawani. These stories usually sung for religious purposes on the day of Muharram among Shi’a Muslims achieved another meaning when placed amidst the powerful modernist abstract paintings of artist Jeram Patel. The voice of Askari and the narration of Syeda resonated with the metaphor of ‘dark loam’ used by the curator Roobina Karode to describe the work of Jeram Patel. The performance was conceptualized by Sarover Zaidi.
