Everyday Emergencies: Protests, the Pandemic and a Changing Art World

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art is pleased to present, ‘Everyday Emergencies: Protests, the Pandemic and a Changing Art World with Gayatri Sinha, Homi K Bhabha and Parul Dave-Mukherji.

The coming together of the pandemic and the protests across global communities propels an altered response to the way in which art is received and viewed. This talk addresses some of the issues around art as an evolutionary symbol of power, and the broader public response to history, memorialisation and nationhood. 

Gayatri Sinha is an editor, curator and critic based in New Delhi. She is the founder director of the visual arts e-resource, ciriticalcollective.in. Her primary areas of enquiry are around the structures of gender and iconography, media, economics and social history. Her curatorial endeavours cover domains of photography and lens based work from archival and contemporary sources. Gayatri has held lectures in Duke University, NYU, Tate Britain, MOMA and several other institutional spaces.

Homi K Bhabha is the Anne F. Rothenberg Professor of the Humanities in the English and Comparative Literature Departments at Harvard University. He was founding director of the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University from 2011-2019 and director of the Harvard Humanities Center from 2005-2011. From 2008-2019, he held the inaugural position of Senior Adviser on the Humanities to the President and Provost at Harvard University and from 2005-2008 served as Senior Adviser in the Humanities at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. He is a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.

Parul Dave-Mukherji is a professor of Visual Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. She holds a PhD in Indology from Oxford University. Among her ongoing projects is 20th Century Indian Art, co-edited by Partha Mitter and Rakhee Balaram (London: Thames and Hudson, forthcoming).
