2 August 2013-27 September 2013
The world in the 19th century witnessed itself barely held together on the verge of all-pervasive and rampant automatisation, machinisation, equipment, industry and armament; and the immediate consequences of these phenomena: surveillance, nuclear war, accidental footage, dehumanization, a loss of individual personality and late 20th century paranoia. The subsequent development to this cathartic scenario was cinema. This film series aimed to evaluate how machines respond to each other, the manner in which the tracking shots assesses the diagonals, assembly lines and general geometries of modern factories and how the cinematic form is capable of instilling vigour into those whose lives mimic the workings of machines.
The films that were screened during this festival included Workers leaving the Factory, Arrival of the train at Le Ciotat, Anemic, Man with a Movie Camera, Sherlock Jr., The Cameraman, A nous la Liberte, Shoulder Arms, Modern Times and many more. The program also featured guest lectures, talks, discussions and video essays.
