Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents Line, Beats & Shadows – A conversation between artists Ayesha Sultana and Sumakshi Singh with Roobina Karode, Director and Chief Curator, KNMA. 

Line, Beats & Shadows is part of the ongoing exhibition Scripting Time • Memory • Ecology mounted at KNMA Saket. It explores the artistic practices of Ayesha Sultana, Prabhavathi Meppayil, Lala Rukh and Sumakshi Singh and their eclectic interpretation of abstraction. In this exhibition Ayesha Sultana’s abstract aesthetic of repetitive patterns and extracts from the visuals of Dhaka’s shantytowns are brought to fore through her ingenious use of the medium – the fragile and folded paper masquerading as solid and shiny metal. In Sumakshi Singh’s works, memories of deracination and exile, however haunting and heavy they are, get literally webbed to the fragile tapestry of time without losing their apparitional and ephemeral nature.

Ayesha Sultana was born in 1984 in Jessore, Bangladesh. She completed her BFA from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore under the guidance of Rashid Rana followed by a diploma in art education. Later on, she even lectured at the university for two years. Her art practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, object and sound using unconventional and found materials.  Her art practice is heavily influenced by elements of architecture and spatial structures exploring the aspects of depth, form, space and colour. In her works, the objects made by hand often appear to be made of machine-like precision. She lives and works in Bangladesh.

Sumakshi Singh was born in 1980 in New Delhi. Upon completing her BFA from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda (2001), Sumakshi received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. Following which she completed an artist residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Her art practice consists of interactive installations, drawings, thread-work, animations and architecture interventions in turn transforming space and form to a new dimension. Sumakshi focuses on the themes of nature, home, mobility and even history. She lives and works in New Delhi.
