A Mushroom Foraging Walk
Facilitated by Malavika
City as Museum
Date : 14 September 2024
Time : 9:00 AM to 11 AM
Venue : Hauz Khas
Meeting Point : https://maps.app.goo.gl/3gwPR9MKEwLXum2ZA?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
The walk will begin by learning about the kingdom of fungi, their role in our ecology, where they grow, and how they are used. It also discusses the concept of 'entanglement', 'companion species', and how to develop a 'forager methodology' within an artistic practice. While going further in the walk, participants will observe the various microclimates housed within our ecosystem, and pause to observe and discuss each mushroom species they encounter.
Participants will be provided with a 'Field Guide' booklet, which contains essential information about fungi and mushroom foraging, as well as a take-home 'spore printing' activity.
Participants are required to bring a pencil, and a small basket to collect specimens. At the end of the walk, each participant will take home a specimen to create a spore print with.
Artist bio:
Malavika is a self-taught mycologist and urban forager bringing fungi to the people, and the people to fungi. They began foraging for mushrooms a decade ago, developing a creative practice which investigates the interplay of community and ecology through the lens of fungi. They intertwine mycology and queer theory to cultivate alternative paradigms of self and other, creating space for novel interpretations of our shared ecology. As the India Program Lead for the global Fungi Foundation, they also lead ethnomycological investigations across India.
