Nalini Malani, Chapter Two Opening Talk
22 May 2014
Speakers: Nalini Malani, Roobina Karode
This talk was centered on the second chapter of Nalini Malani’s retrospective ‘You Can’t Keep Acid in a Paper Bag’, where a discussion between the curator Roobina Karode and Malani brought to light some interesting facets of the latter’s art practice. Malani, an artist rich in versatility of medium and material transformed the museum into a theatrical and immersive space and the impressive archive of her works contributed in making this exhibition a prominent one, along with many of her historical and recent works. It also included some of her long duration projects that have been exhibited for the first time in India. After a brief and formal introduction by Kiran Nadar, the subsequent discussion underlined Malani’s artistic journey which deals with the social and political issues that the nation is grappling with, the intentions and influences behind her major works and her concerns around exploring diverse materials.
